Dvorak meets Burleigh at the National Conservatory and becomes enamored by his singing of Spirituals, concluding

Burleigh formerly enters National Conservatory as as student and plays upright bass and timpani in the orchestra with Dvorak as conductor. He also auditions for the position of soloist at St. George’s Church on East 16th Street and becomes the first Black American soloist of a white congregation in Jim Crow NYC. He retired in 1946 after 52 years.

1895

Plagued by financial difficulties, Mrs. Thurber fails to pay Dvorak’s earnings and he decides to return to Europe. Burleigh continues his studies at the National Conservatory, graduating in 1896.
